FLAMENGO WINS FIRST MATCH IN BRASILERAO

The 40th edition of the world´s most difficult football championship began on Saturday, May 21. The 2009 champion, Flamengo of Rio got off to a great start with a 4-0 win over Avai. Ronaldinho Gaucho scored two goals and showed to be in very good form. That same day, another of RJ´s most famous clubs, Vasco da Gama, played its first match in Fortaleza against Ceará and also won by 3-1. On Sunday, May 22, the other teams from Rio did not do so well. Botafogo lost to Palmeiras by 1-0 and Fluminense (the 2010 champions) lost at home to São Paulo F.C by 2-0. Anyway there are still 37 more matches to be played so the teams that lost have plenty of time to recover. Until now many local football experts have stated that two of the favorites to win this year´s Brasileirão are Flamengo and Santos. Flamengo won this year´s Rio de Janeiro State Championships and is coached by the experienced Wanderley Luxemburgo.

RJ Real Estate is Booming

Even with similar prices as in NY,Paris or Tokyo, large scale investors continue buying property in Rio de Janeiro. Construction giants such as Concal or Mosak, whose specialty is selling high cost property, don´t even bother to set up sales stands in new buildings: by using telemarketing they can sell a complete building in less than a month.

In 2010, Mosak bought a plot of land in Leblon , built a 24 apartment block (all were 90 square meter units) , that were sold in less than 30 days. The prices ranged from 1.5 million reals to 3 million Reals. The majority of the investors are from São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio itself. The forthcoming 2014 Fifa World Cup , 2016 Summer Olympics and the much improved security situation, explain why there is so much interest in investing in this city.In the high season that includes New Year´s fireworks show (the biggest in the world) and Carnival, monthly rentals can reach R15,000 while a day in an apartment can easily cost R1000.

FLUMINENSE IS KNOCKED OUT OF LIBERTADORES

It was a tragic Wednesday night for one of RJ's most popular clubs . Fluminense had won the first match against Libertad in Rio by 3-1, and only needed a draw to advance in the Libertadores Cup. The match was played last night at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asuncion , capital of Paraguay. The local team played with violence and there were many aggressive fouls on the Fluminense players. Fred was hit by an elbow in the head and had to be bandaged since he was bleeding very much. The Brazilian team ended the first half at 0-0 and it seemed it could get the result it needed. However, in the second half , after only ten minutes, goalkeeper Berna fumbled the ball and let in a long range shot. Libertad continued putting on the pressure and in the last 15 minutes managed to score twice and qualify for the quarterfinals.
In general it was a very bad night for Brazilian clubs : Gremio lost 1-0 against Chilean club Universidad Católica, Internacional was defeated 2-1 at its home ground in Porto Alegre by Penarol of Uruguay, and Cruzeiro lost in Colombia against Once Caldas (2-0). The only Brazilian team that continues in the competition is Santos, where Neymar and Paulo Ganso play.
