"LA U" CHAMPS IN SOUTH AMERICA !

Universidad de Chile wins Copa Bridgestone Sudamericana.

Finally, after nearly 50 years of frustrations and near misses, one of Chile´s most popular clubs has won an international title. January 14, 2011. This day will surely be remembered by fans of "La U" (as the team is nicknamed) as the most important in its history. After an impressive campaign (unbeaten in all matches, 21 goals scored, 2 received) that included victories over Brazilian greats such as Flamengo and Vasco da Gama, the Chilean club´s last obstacle was L.D.U of Ecuador. The last match of the Copa Sudamericana was played on Wednesday night at Santiago´s National Stadium in front of 55,000 spectators. La U had won the first match in Quito by 1-0, but even so the LDU players showed that they were not going down without a fight. Even so, the match had a great start for the locals since Eduardo Vargas (being tempted by Chelsea F.C) scored after only two minutes. A great first time shot from outside the area. From then on LDU tried to avoid the killer second goal and hanged on until the 67th minute , when defender Guagua was sent off for elbowing Lorenzetti in the face.

It was the same player, Lorenzetti, that scored dealt the final blow to LDU as he scored ten minutes later. With the extra space, LA U took control of the match completely and in the 87th minute Vargas scored his eleventh goal of the competition (highest goalscorer ever in Copa Sudamericana).

All set for semifinals of “Copa Bridgestone Sudamericana”

In spite of drawing the first match in Rio de Janeiro at 1-1, it was a confident group of Vasco da Gama players that traveled today to Santiago, Chile, to face local champions Universidad de Chile on Wednesday night. The kick-off is at 8:50 pm local time and the refereeing trio will be formed by Dario Ubriaco, with the assistance of linesmen Mauricio Espinosa and Miguel Nevas, (all from Uruguay). The Vasco da Gama squad will go onto the pitch at full strength, with stars such as Brazilian international Dede, (regarded the best defender in the local league) and Bernardo, one of the most promising young strikers in the country. Also accompanying the group is veteran Juninho Pernambucano, who was at Olympique Lyon for many years, and returned this year to Vasco da Gama, the team that made him famous. However, odds favour Universidad de Chile, currently unbeaten in the past 29 matches, both at Copa Sudamericana and national league, where it is first in the table with a ten point margin. Fans of “La U”(as the club is nicknamed) consider this match as one of the most important in history, since never before has the team shown such impressive form, after having been frustrated several times at international level. BOPE KILLS TOP RIO GANGSTER

Fernandinho Beira Mar and Marcelo Niteroi (right)

Last Tuesday night the BOPE (Special Operations Battallion) ambushed and killed Marcelo Niteroi, leader of Comando Vermelho , one of Rio's main drug trafficking gangs. The helicopter of the BOPE detected Niteroi at the Favela da Maré, along with several of his bodyguards. Marcelo Niteroi tried to fire his AK47 against the helicopter, but the BOPE snipers were too fast and shot him in the head and stomach.

Niteroi was selling drugs for a total of ten million Reals per month, and he was the right hand man of Fernandinho Beira-Mar, the previous boss that is now at a maximum security jail in northern Brazil. Beira Mar cried all day in his cell after being informed that Niteroi had been killed. Now a dispute is expected between the other lieutenants for the No. 1 position at Comando Vermelho (Red Command). One of the candidates is Mica, a childhood friend of one of Brazil's most famous footballers, Adriano, that last year was playing for Flamengo.

The Rio police are going to make a big move on November 13 by occupying Rio's biggest favela, the Rocinha, that is near one of the city´s poshest suburbs, Sao Conrado. Nem, another of Rio's biggest traffickers is at Rocinha, so there may be some armed resisistance by the traffickers.

WILL BRAZIL BUY THE RAFALE F3?

In 2006 the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) began the FX-2 project with the objective of upgrading its fleet of combat airplanes. This plan includes the acquisition of 36 fighters at a total cost of US$3 Billion.

Until now three companies have a chance to win the contract: the Dassault Rafale F3 (France), the Boeing F/A-18 E/F (USA) and the SAAB Gripen NG (Sweden). The big question is: "When will the Brazil announce the name of the winner ?" According to Gerard Sellier, Dassault´s Offset and Industrial Co-operation Manager, the answer will be given in 2012.

Rafale International is the only company that has accepted the Brazilian government´s requirement to manufacture the fighters in Brazilian territory and set up a factory in the country so that in the future the Rafale F3 can be exported to other South American countries. When comparing the technical aspects of each fighter, the Rafale appears superior in several categories:

1) The F3 can carry more weapons (9000 kgs), while the F18 can carry 8000 kgs and the Gripen NG carries 6300 Kgs.

2) The F3´s estimated combat range is 1850 kms, against 1231 kms of the F18 and 900 kms of the Gripen. This is very important due to Brazil´s huge territory of 8 million square kilometers.

3) The Rafale is the only fighter that can fully operate on the Sao Paulo, the Brazilian navy´s new aircraft carrier.

4) The Rafale can shoot at six targets simultaneously with its MICA missiles .

5) The F3 has been proven in real combat situations in Afghanistan and Lybia.

6) 180 RAFALE F3 are in use by the French Air Force.

FLAMENGO TAKES LEAD IN BRASILERAO

Flamengo is the new leader of the Brazilian National Championship (Brasileirão). The RJ team beat Coritiba by 1-0 at the Engenhao stadium. Yet again, Ronaldinho Gaucho was fundamental to get three more points. It was Ronaldinho´s precise cross in the last minute to Jael that helped the young striker to score the winner....see the video of the goal here.

Ronaldinho scores great goal for Flamengo !

Just when the Flamengo fans were beginning to complain about R10's (Ronaldinho´s nickname) poor performances on the pitch (has been seen several times at discoteques and at late hours) , the midfielder put his act together and helped his team to beat Atletico Mineiro this weekend. The match was played on Saturday at the Engenhão Stadium in Rio, and it seemed that it was going to be a disastrous evening for Flamengo, since Atletico was the first to score. At this moment Ronaldinho began to make his presence on the pitch as he organized his team´s attack and equalized with a fantastic goal. (See the goals courtesy of Globoesporte).

Now my question is: Why did Mano menezes leave him out of the Brazilian national team for Copa America? Brazil´s first match is on July 3 against Venzuela. Mano, you are making the same mistake as Dunga inj the 2010 World Cup. Ronaldinho can win a match in half an hour, even if he is still not 100% fit.

THEY FOUND HIM LAST NIGHT IN AN APART HOTEL IN A POSH AREA KNOWN AS ITAIM BIBI. EDMUNDO KNEW HE WAS GOING TO BE ARRESTED, SO WHY DIDNT HE GIVE HIMSELF IN? ARREST WARRANT FOR EDMUNDO !

The former star of the Brazilian national team and Vasco da Gama F.C. is accused of being responsible of the death of 3 people in 1995. In December that year, Edmundo crashed his 4x4 station wagon into another car at the Lagoa district of Rio de Janeiro. Joana Martins, Carlos Britis and Alessandra Cristini died that day. Yesterday Judge Carlos Eduardo de Figueiredo issued the arrest warrant against Edmundo, and until now there are no news of his whereabouts. According to Edmundo´s lawyer, Arthur Lavigne, the order is surprising since he thought that the case had prescripted after more than 10 years.

VASCO DA GAMA WINS 2011 COPA DO BRASIL!

RJ TEAM QUALIFIES FOR 2012 COPA LIBERTADORES

Vasco put on a great peformance last night in Coritiba against the local team and won the Copa Brasil for the first time its history. Since Vasco had won the first match against Coritiba F.C by 1-0, all it needed was a 0-0 draw to be champions. Vasco started off very well by scoring the first goal in the 12th minute, but the home team fought back and the first half ended 2-1 to Coritiba, that needed to win by a 2 goal margin. After 15 minutes 0f the second half, Elder Luis scored with a long range shot for Vasco and the fans went crazy, sensing the victory to be near. Coritiba scored yet again, but it was too late, the match ended and Vasco is the new champion of the Copa Brasil. Valeu, Vasco !

Ten minutes later R.Gaucho tapped in from close range after a good cross by Galhardo. In the 36th minute Jobson put Bahia ahead yet again but Botinelli equalized for Flamengo after ten minutes of the second half. Egidio scored what seemed to be the winning goal in the 72nd minute for Flamengo, but Jobson saved the day for Bahia with a last minute goal.

All the teams from Rio did quite well this weekend:

FLAMENGO WINS FIRST MATCH IN BRASILERAO

The 40th edition of the world´s most difficult football championship began on Saturday, May 21. The 2009 champion, Flamengo of Rio got off to a great start with a 4-0 win over Avai. Ronaldinho Gaucho scored two goals and showed to be in very good form. That same day, another of RJ´s most famous clubs, Vasco da Gama, played its first match in Fortaleza against Ceará and also won by 3-1. On Sunday, May 22, the other teams from Rio did not do so well. Botafogo lost to Palmeiras by 1-0 and Fluminense (the 2010 champions) lost at home to São Paulo F.C by 2-0. Anyway there are still 37 more matches to be played so the teams that lost have plenty of time to recover. Until now many local football experts have stated that two of the favorites to win this year´s Brasileirão are Flamengo and Santos. Flamengo won this year´s Rio de Janeiro State Championships and is coached by the experienced Wanderley Luxemburgo.

RJ Real Estate is Booming

Even with similar prices as in NY,Paris or Tokyo, large scale investors continue buying property in Rio de Janeiro. Construction giants such as Concal or Mosak, whose specialty is selling high cost property, don´t even bother to set up sales stands in new buildings: by using telemarketing they can sell a complete building in less than a month.

SEE VIDEO OF NEW HOSTEL IN COPACABANA

In 2010, Mosak bought a plot of land in Leblon , built a 24 apartment block (all were 90 square meter units) , that were sold in less than 30 days. The prices ranged from 1.5 million reals to 3 million Reals. The majority of the investors are from São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio itself. The forthcoming 2014 Fifa World Cup , 2016 Summer Olympics and the much improved security situation, explain why there is so much interest in investing in this city.In the high season that includes New Year´s fireworks show (the biggest in the world) and Carnival, monthly rentals can reach R15,000 while a day in an apartment can easily cost R1000.

FLUMINENSE IS KNOCKED OUT OF LIBERTADORES

It was a tragic Wednesday night for one of RJ's most popular clubs . Fluminense had won the first match against Libertad in Rio by 3-1, and only needed a draw to advance in the Libertadores Cup. The match was played last night at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asuncion , capital of Paraguay. The local team played with violence and there were many aggressive fouls on the Fluminense players. Fred was hit by an elbow in the head and had to be bandaged since he was bleeding very much. The Brazilian team ended the first half at 0-0 and it seemed it could get the result it needed. However, in the second half , after only ten minutes, goalkeeper Berna fumbled the ball and let in a long range shot. Libertad continued putting on the pressure and in the last 15 minutes managed to score twice and qualify for the quarterfinals.
In general it was a very bad night for Brazilian clubs : Gremio lost 1-0 against Chilean club Universidad Católica, Internacional was defeated 2-1 at its home ground in Porto Alegre by Penarol of Uruguay, and Cruzeiro lost in Colombia against Once Caldas (2-0). The only Brazilian team that continues in the competition is Santos, where Neymar and Paulo Ganso play.

However, Marquinho and Conca scored two more goals to secure the victory for the 2010 Brazilian Champions. The return match is next wednesday at the Defensores del Chaco stadium in Asuncion. Fluminense can lose 1-0 in Paraguay and still qualify for the next round.

FLUMINENSE STILL HAS A CHANCE IN LIBERTADORES

Just when Fluminense fans thought their team would be knocked out of this year´s edition of the Libertadores, the "Team of Warriors" fought back last week and defeated America of Mexico by 3-2. It was a thrilling match at the Engenhao Stadium, Sanchez scored first for America in the 20th minute. "Flu" goalkeeper Berna fumbled the ball and the Uruguayan born striker ran the ball into the net. Defender Gum brought hope for the local team as he headed into the America goal near to the end of the first half.In the second half, Sanchez yet again put America in front with a lucky "cross-shot". Fluminense fought back and managed to equalize and the fans thought they would end up drawing with America. However with only 5 minutes of play remaining, Deco, the former Barcelona star appeared to score the winner. Fluminense plays tomorrow night in Montevideo against Nacional, and needs to win to continue with chances of qualifying. Until now, Argentinos Juniors is first in the group with 7 points, America is second with 6 points, Flu has 5 points and Nacional has 4 points.

Fluminense in trouble after losing to America (Mexico)

The 2010 Brazilian champions, Fluminense, may be near to being eliminated from this year´s Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the UEFA Champions League. In its third match , Fluminense lost by 1-0 to America at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City. "Flu" only has 2 points after drawing its first two matches in Rio de Janeiro.

Now the team only has 22% chance of qualifying for the next round of the Libertadores. Fluminense has been without its star striker Fred, and also its midfield general, Dario Conca is in poor form, so it seems that the Rio de Janeiro team will have a hard time to beat Argentinos Juniors or Nacional (Uruguay) in the next two matches that will be played in Buenos Aires and Montevideo respectively. Argentinos Juniors is now leading Group 3 after beating Nacional by 1-0 in Montevideo. America has six points, Fluminense 2 and Nacional only 1 point.

Not only can apartments more easily accommodate larger groups; you can often prepare simple meals in the apartment and do laundry in the building, yielding even greater savings. Short-term apartment rentals also offer visitors the chance to get an idea of what it's really like to live in Rio de Janeiro -- away from the concierge and crowds of hotels.

1. Understand What You're Getting
Hosted apartments may or may not include breakfast, and you also might have a bathroom you share with the host. Many hosts are interested in meeting visitors and share great tips and insight with their guests -- others are most interested in the financial gains of hosting. Know the condition and amenities available in whatever property you rent. It's important to request references and recent photos.

2. Ask About Pets, Children and Smoking
If you have pets or children traveling with you, check with the agency to ensure that you get appropriate accommodations. With most apartments, young children are not a problem, but they may be in hosted accommodations. Apartments tend to be non-smoking, but ask to be sure. If you're a smoker ask about appropriate properties. Many Copacabana, Ipanema and other Zona Sul apartment buildings do not accommodate pets, but again, clarify when you reserve (& be aware you will probably be asked for a security deposit.)

3. Book Ahead for the Best Choices
While there are frequently apartments available on short notice, you'll have the most options for location and amenities the further out you reserve your accommodations.

4. Know the Cancellation and Payment Policies
Cancellation policies vary widely, so be sure that you understand the policy and charges associated with canceling your reservation or changing the dates of your visit. Even if you reserve with a credit card, payment for your accommodations may be required in cash or Traveler's checks -- clarify when you reserve. Some services charge a cleaning fee when you leave, and others include the cleaning fee in the cost of the apartment.

5. Get Details in Advance
Unlike a hotel where there is always someone at the front desk, you might have a shorter window of opportunity to get the keys to your apartment. Be sure to confirm where/when you'll be picking up the keys, and bring along contact information in the event that your flight is delayed or your plans change.

6. Maid Service
Short term apartment rentals rarely include daily maid service, though you can often pay extra if this is essential to you. This means you'll need to make your own bed and you might need to reuse the towels provided for several days before they are replaced. Ask when booking to find out the specific policy.

7. Apartments Might Need to Be Juggled
"A hotel has hundreds of rooms in the event that a room number needs to be changed or client needs to be moved. Approximately 25% of the time the original apartment number which is booked needs to be changed within a building. Approximately 10% of the time a client needs to be relocated to another building. Often long term clients extend and the short term bookings are the ones which need to be juggled."

8. Save Money With Self-Catering
You can save quite a bit of money by staying in an apartment -- particularly if you choose to have breakfast or lunch in your apartment. This is a great chance to check out some of Rio de Janeiro´s fantastic supermarkets and gourmet stores and save money at the same time.

9. Be Courteous
Keep in mind that you'll often be staying in apartment buildings where many people live full-time. In Brazil, and Rio especially it is very important to get along with the doorman (or doormen). These people can help you in case of a problem. Greet them when you leave and arrive at the building. Try your best to keep walkways clear if you're waiting in the lobby and don't crowd yourself into elevators with all your luggage when they are full of tenants. Also, keep in mind that folks have to go to work in the morning, so keep your voices down in hallways and other common areas.

RONALDINHO WILL DEBUT FOR FLAMENGO !

RONALDINHO GAUCHO, one of Brazil´s most famous footballers of all time, will make his debut on February 2. He will play his first match for his new club, Flamengo, at Rio´s Engenhao Stadium. The match will be against Nova Iguassu, as part of the fifth round of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship. Until now Flamengo is doing very well, since it has won the first 4 matches.

Meanwhile, Flamengo´s archrival, Vasco da Gama, is in a completely different situation. The team has lost all three matches, and after losing the game against Boavista by 3-1, captain Carlos Alberto nearly hit club president Roberto Dinamite when he came into the dressing room and complained to the players for their poor performance. The day after the match, Dinamite fired coach PC Gusmao, and banned Carlos Alberto from playing in the next matches. The situation became worse on Sunday, January 30, when Vasco da Gama lost to archrivals Flamengo by 2-1, in the fourth round of the Carioca (Rio State Championship).

FRENCH COUPLE BUSTED WITH "MACONHA"

FRENCHIES ARRESTED BY POLICE OFFICERS AT Chapéu-Mangueira FAVELA
by Dan RJ

A year ago the Mayor of Rio had a great idea: set up police stations in the favelas. They are called UPPs (Police Pacifying Units in the Portuguese acronym). Since then all the favelas on the border with Copacabana are relatively peaceful. Before the UPPs were established, it was frequent to hear shots fired by automatic weapons, and the noise of fireworks being set off . There were two reasons for the fireworks to be exploded : 1) to warn the trafiickers that the police were to enter the favela 2) to alert buyers that the traffickers were selling maconha, cocaine or crack. One of the most troblesome favelas was that of Chapeu-Mangueira, near Princesa Isabel Avenue in the district known as Leme, on the northern side of Copacabana. On January 17, 2011, EXTRA, a local newspaper, informed that the cops from the UPP at Chapeu-Mangueira, arrested a French couple, identified as Rolse Antony Fransos, (34 years old )and Maria Cristalli Marcadon, (23). They were living at the Favela , and after searching their home, the cops found that they had 400 grams of "maconha" (marijuana, cannabis sativa) hidden in the fridge.
To make matters worse, Rolse had a great idea and offered the officers a payment of R$250 in order to be left free. Both were taken to the 13th Police Station at Ipanema and jailed accused of drug trafficking. They will go on trial in a few months.

After being chosen to host the 2016 Olympics de 2016 and the final of the 2014 Fifa World Cup, Rio has become the center of global attention. There has also been a drastic reduction in urban violence urbana and a more optimistic atmosphere for business. In a recent Global Metro Monitor report published by the London School of Economics and the Brookings Institution. of the 150 main cities in the world, Rio has seen the biggest leap in the rankings, from the 100th position to 10th.

RECONSTRUCTION OF MARACANA STADIUM MAY TAKE LONGER

The cost of remodelling Rio´s Maracana Stadium may cost up to 1 billion Brazilian Reals, and also will take longer than expected. A local press article stated that the Consórcio Maracanã Rio 2014, the company in charge of the project has discovered that more parts of the original structure of the stadium, that was built in 1950, are deteriorating. BOPE SOLDIER MURDERED IN RIO DE JANEIRO

BY DAN RJ:

On December 29, 2010, a member of BOPE (aka Tropa de Elite , Rio´s elite police special forces) identified as Alessandro Costa Lopes was shot to death in a suburb on the northern area of the city. It is still not clear who or why killed Alessandro, but it was a big blow for the morale of this organization. The funeral was held on Monday 2nd of January. Even so, in its 30 years of existence, only 19 BOPE soldiers have been killed in action, while the numbers of drug traffickers killed by BOPE reaches thousands. During the New Year´s Eve weekend, apart from Alessandro, two other police officers, (but not members of BOPE) were murdered in Rio, one was shot to death as he arrived at his home, and another as he tried to stop men from stealing his car.
